It’s the humidity that gets ya!
Last weekend, we (C. David, Steve, Tom and I) embarked on the 150-mile, two-day bicycle tour to support MS. It was a great weekend and I think we were all able to walk to our cars without crutches afterwards…so, that’s good, too!
But, there were a few bumps along the way. The first day of riding wore me out more than I remember it doing last year. I thought I was going to have to throw in the cards Sunday morning when I woke up. My legs were weak and shaky and, after last year’s second day (which just about did me in completely), I wasn’t feeling pretty unsure about the whole thing. But, I went to breakfast and loaded up on the carbs, then grabbed the bike and hit the road. It was a perfect day for riding; the temperature was an overcast, 80 degrees with almost no humidity…the sun didn’t even peak out until lunch time (which was around the mile 129 marker of the 150). After about 5 miles, my legs slowly warmed up and I was ready to rock. I paced myself – maybe a little too much – and really only pushed my limits the last 10-mile leg (averaged about 19mph during that last stretch). I pulled in for an overall 15.2mph. After all those worries, I felt so good at the end, I think I could’ve done another 25 miles to pull my first century (maybe next year! )! And, the wife, son and mother-in-law all got to see me cross the finish line!
It was a great event, but I’m extremely happy about not having to do it this weekend (a humid 96 degrees expected tomorrow…bleh!) – it’s really stinkin’ hot out there this weekend.
Next on these crazy boys list of events is a triathlon – a canoeing/jogging/biking triathlon in October, where you canoe 6 miles, run 5.5 miles then cycle 18 miles. I think we all have our concerns with jogging/running 5.5 miles, but we’ve got 3 months to get our sorry butts in shape for it.
We are so appreciative of those who supported the team on the MS150 ride; your contributions are truly valuable!
